The paints are water-based acrylics so, therefore, share many of the same characteristics. Vallejo is a Spanish company with a huge range of paints that caters to the traditional kit building hobbyist and to wargamers. It is for this reason we recommend most new players to the Warhammer hobby stick with GW, at least in the beginning as it is easy to pick up the paint of the right color and follow the guides with minimal mess.Ĭitadel is not the only paint manufacturer with a range aimed at mini painters and hobbyists. It is also easy to clean up after a painting session, again using water to remove paint from brushes.Ĭitadel paints have undergone several changes over the years, with GW refining the formula and color choice to the extensive range we have today. Paint can be thinned down with tap water although some painters prefer to work with deionized or distilled water with the impurities removed. They are easy to work with and require no expensive or smelly solvents. There is good reason GW chose water-based acrylic paints. Their citadel branded paint is also found in independent game stores the world over and features in all of their official publications such as White Dwarf as well as their online painting guides. For starters, it is the de facto standard when walking into a Games Workshop or Warhammer store. This, coupled with the tone-matching between Vallejo paints and spray cans, as well as their suitability for airbrushing really might make it a strong choice over the (comparatively) more expensive Citadel paint set.Water-based acrylic paint is the obvious choice for mini painting.
One thing that becomes very evident from this chart is just how limiting the available paint range is that Citadel provide. If you have it, you could choose to use Reaper MSP Pine Green for a closer match instead. That’s a “good match”, but is approaching a “mediocre match”. In the Gnarls Green row, you’ll see that the nearest match is Waaagh! Flesh, with ΔE of 3.85. To take the example from the spreadsheet, if you wanted to find which Citadel Base is the best match to P3 “Gnarls Green”, you would go to the P3 page and look under the Citadel Base columns. I came across a fantastic conversion chart for paint colors across ranges by different paint manufacturers, and thought it was something that could be of use to everyone.
